Experience

You and your Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) will meet online via a secure platform. Information will be collected to provide an overall picture of your child’s development and communication concerns. The SLP will ask about your concerns, your child’s medical and developmental history. Informal or formal measures will be used to gain a better understanding of your child’s communication skills. Informal observations will consist of the SLP watching your child play and possibly getting the parent to interact with them as well.

Some guidance from the SLP may be provided to get your child to do something specific so a specific skill can be observed or assessed. For children who are speaking, the SLP will be taking notes on the quality of their voice, any possible articulation errors, difficulties comprehending spoken language and how they express themselves (verbally and non-verbally).

Formal assessments are standardized tests that provide a score or percentile rank that can be used to compare how your child is doing with other children their age. Formal assessments will only be used if appropriate. Following the initial appointment the SLP and the parent/guardian can develop a treatment plan which addresses the concerns noted and observed during this appointment.

Speech Language Pathology & Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A speech-language pathologist (SLP) plays a crucial role in supporting children with autism by addressing communication and language challenges. Here’s how an SLP can help:

  1. Assessment: The SLP begins by assessing the child’s communication skills, including speech, language, social communication, and pragmatics. This evaluation helps identify specific strengths and challenges.
  2. Individualized Therapy: Based on the assessment, the SLP develops a personalized therapy plan tailored to the child’s needs. This may involve improving speech articulation, expanding vocabulary, and enhancing social communication skills.
  3. Social Communication Skills: SLPs work on teaching children with autism how to engage in effective social interactions. This includes turn-taking, making eye contact, understanding non-verbal cues, and using appropriate gestures.
  4. Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): For non-verbal or minimally verbal children, SLPs may introduce AAC systems like communication boards or devices to facilitate communication.
  5. Speech Sound Disorders: Some children with autism may have speech sound disorders. SLPs can help improve articulation and speech clarity through exercises and techniques.
  6. Language Development: SLPs work on expanding a child’s language skills, helping them express their thoughts, needs, and emotions more effectively.
  7. Feeding and Swallowing: If a child with autism has feeding or swallowing issues, SLPs can address these concerns to ensure proper nutrition and safety.
  8. Collaboration: SLPs often collaborate with other professionals such as occupational therapists, behavior analysts, and educators to provide comprehensive care.
  9. Parent and Caregiver Training: SLPs educate parents and caregivers on strategies to support their child’s communication and language development at home.
  10. Progress Monitoring: Regular assessments are conducted to track the child’s progress and adjust therapy goals as needed.

Your Online Speech Language Pathology Appointments: What To Expect

Initial Consultation Appointment With Report

A report is a written documentation of the session. All the information collected and any observations, impressions the SLP have along with recommendations. If any questionnaires or assessments require scoring the SLP would put the results in this report. A written report may be useful to have for your records and to share with other professionals (e.g schools, teachers, daycare staff etc) that are working with or caring for your child. The report would include information collected at the initial session with recommendations, strategies and a potential treatment plan.

Your Follow Up Appointments

Once the plan or goals have been developed together in partnership with the family, sessions could include:

  • Parent coaching (strategies provided to parents/guardians) and direct intervention (for children who can sit and participate at the computer).
  • Online guidance as to how to work towards the goals selected by empowering families with strategies and support to encourage optimal communication development.

The number of sessions will depend on the concerns identified at the initial visit and the capacity of the parents/guardians working with their child. Sessions will take place through a private secure Telehealth application on the computer.
