The Prenatal Acupuncture Experience

Our warm and calming environment is designed to help you feel safe and cared for. Your first prenatal acupuncture session begins with a thorough discussion of your health history and pregnancy journey. We tailor each treatment to your unique needs—whether you’re seeking relief from discomfort, emotional support, or preparation for birth.

During the session, you’ll rest comfortably as fine, sterile needles are placed at carefully selected points on your body. Most clients find the experience deeply relaxing, often leaving with an immediate sense of relief and calm.

Our practitioners are highly trained in prenatal care and committed to ensuring your treatments are both effective and nurturing—for you and your baby.

Acupuncture in every trimester

1st Trimester
Acupuncture can provide drug free relief to some of the most common complaints in early pregnancy, such as nausea, vomiting, headaches and fatigue.

2nd Trimester
During the second trimester, women experience a lot of changes in their body due to the growth of the baby. This can lead to back pain and the misalignment of posture. Acupuncture treatments can reduce or correct these conditions, and can also give relief from heartburn, hemorrhoids, anxiety and depression.

3rd Trimester
Acupuncture helps ease many of the discomforts of the 3rd trimester, such as back pain, sciatica, swelling, constipation, heartburn and insomnia. Acupuncture treatments can also gently prepare the body for labour by ripening the cervix and by teaching your body how to promote efficient contractions. Clients who get acupuncture throughout their pregnancy, especially the third trimester, report faster and less complicated deliveries.

Breech Position
Most babies turn to a head down position between week 28 and 32. If your baby hasn’t turned by 33 weeks, Traditional Chinese Medicine has a reliable and non-invasive approach. Moxibustion is a process of burning a Chinese herb (dried mugwort) over an acupuncture point to encourage your baby to turn. The stick does not come in contact with the skin, but warms and stimulates the acupuncture point. These treatments change your hormonal levels which cause the baby to increase its movements and rotate accordingly. During the appointment you will be instructed on how to perform this take home treatment.

Book as soon as you are aware baby is in breech position, the earlier you receive care the better the outcome.

How Prenatal Acupuncture Works

By gently stimulating specific points in the body, prenatal acupuncture can ease pain, improve circulation, and help balance hormones. This natural therapy not only supports overall comfort during pregnancy but also prepares your body for labour and delivery—promoting cervical ripening, encouraging optimal baby positioning, and potentially shortening labour while reducing the need for medical interventions.

In addition to supporting labour preparation, prenatal acupuncture enhances blood flow, reduces swelling and inflammation, and releases tension in muscles and joints. Research, including a well-known study by Elden et al. (2005), has shown that acupuncture can be highly effective in relieving pelvic pain during pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I start, and how often should I come?

Anytime—first trimester onward. A typical plan is weekly sessions for 3–4 weeks, then tapering as symptoms improve. In the third trimester, many clients return to weekly to prep for birth.

Common goals include easing nausea/vomiting, reflux, fatigue, headaches, back/hip pain, swelling, insomnia, anxiety, and constipation. Some clients also use it to support overall wellness throughout pregnancy.

If you have a high-risk pregnancy, bleeding, preterm labor signs, fever/infection, or a medical device like certain implants, consult your primary provider first. We’ll review your health history to ensure acupuncture is appropriate that day.
